Gardens in Winter - Blue Monday

Blue Monday

Blue Monday probably does sum up today for me - the rain of the past weekend has been relentless. The woods is full of water so wading out with Mabel is a battle.

Notification of an energy increase dropped into my inbox and I’ve just watched South West water take a meter reading which all seems to add to the gloom!

The January Fidget

January always feels like a long month to me. I think most gardeners can relate to this. Whilst the break from weddings is lovely and the season makes you come in early and sit by the fire - my fidgety self finds waiting for spring hard!

The garden is pretty water logged at the moment and as we are still in the midst of the build many items remain in pots whilst we wait for the final stages like gravel and benches. Its is tempting to rush this part but I know it will all just become an enormous mud bath and given our house is only accessed via the garden no one in my family wants me digging up beds at the moment ha!

The greenhouse is a good place to let my thoughts run away with me a bit. The small but healthy seedlings of autumn sowing are just resting at the moment. Much lifting and shuffling allows me to check water needs but really very little attention is needed. The frost of pre-Christmas did result in some casualties - funny I tend to turf them out into the new raised beds but some seem to to have almost re-generated in there…typical!

Hope

Life is coming back though. Pots of narcissi have green shoots emerging and hellebores are making the break from the soil.

I must remember to be patient. Head inside. Put the kettle on and chat with Mabel about our next wet dog walk in the rain!
